Consider the intended route
Decide whether the umbrella is for a few minutes to a stop or a longer walk across town. A very small model may pack easily without providing the coverage of a larger one. Try it with your coat and bag. Check whether you can hold it while retrieving what you need from the bag. If you already carry several pieces of luggage, include the additional occupied hand in your planning.
Practise opening and closing it
Try the mechanism in a suitable open space and read the instructions. A narrow entrance queue should not be the setting for the first attempt. Check whether the grip and fastening are easy for you to operate and whether the folded umbrella returns to its sleeve without force. A compact model with awkward controls may remain unused more often. Inspect visible damage before relying on it as part of your weather plan.
Take actual conditions seriously
Follow the manufacturer's guidance and consider the weather you encounter. No small model provides a universal solution for every wind condition. If using it becomes impractical or unsafe, choose an appropriate sheltered route or wait somewhere suitable. Keep sufficient distance from other people and avoid opening it beside faces or inside narrow doorways. Close it in good time at entrances so moving indoors does not create unnecessary congestion.
Plan the wet return
Consider where the wet umbrella will go after use. A suitable temporary cover can protect other belongings but does not replace drying it afterwards according to its care instructions. Do not lay it directly on papers or electronics. Reopen the storage arrangement later in an appropriate place. When leaving restaurants or hotels, check the spot where you put it down; an unobtrusive small umbrella is particularly easy to leave behind.
